The theme of today is….
I had to post this. It’s too funny not to. I’m on a roll this morning.
When bad jobs happen to good girls
Had a conversation with my friend ‘Lucy’ this morning about her new job and how cruddy it is. She thinks her new boss thinks she’s a pariah. No matter, she doesn’t much like it there either, but it’s a new job, and how do you tell your husband you got fired after only working a couple of weeks?
I usually announce that kind of news with something like “Honey I had a terrible, horrible day. I got fired. Let’s have some raunchy sex.”
He tends to forget the first part of that sentence. And usually after he farts and goes to sleep I won’t have to deal with the conversation until the next day.
Always got to be on your toes.
Elisha & the Widow’s Oil
2 Kings 4: 1-7
An old woman went to Elisha, the prophet, scared, poor and needing help in caring for her sons. Elisha asked her what she might have to sell so that she could help herself and not be a burden to someone else. She said she didn’t have anything but one jar of oil. So he told her to go get a bunch of empty jars, more than she could count, and bring them to her house, shut herself in and proceed to fill them up with the one jar she had in the house.
Without question or complaint, she did. And she filled every vessel and still had some left over. Elisha told her to go sell all that oil so that she and her sons could live a very long time on the profits.
The point? God provides. He always provides. Just when you think there is nothing left; just when you think that life has collapsed, God saves. He provides. He promises us that he will provide us with everything we need. I believe it. He never promised us a Mercedes. He never promised us a brick home in the ‘burbs. He never promised us all the clothes and jewelry we see paraded before us on TV every day. He promised to care for our every need. Food. Some clothes. A place to stay.
I am thankful for the things God has provided me. I have been truly blessed with children not my own. Grandchildren. A husband of 20 years. A home in the country. 70 acres of woods. A dog I adore. Cats that have lived way longer than average. A business.
I had a jar of oil. It overflows into all the vessels of my life. Thanks, God, for being a true provider.
