Flannel
Flannel died. A cow, with a big heart, a soft and gentle spirit and silent steps. May God provide her a warm and sunny pasture…

The coyote’s found her before I did, and it wasn’t pretty. It’s such a shame. The old gal didn’t deserve to be gutted by dogs. I can only pray that she was long dead before they discovered her. I pray that her passing was gentle and peaceful. She was a good old cow. She gave us some fine babies and some wonderful times. Even though cows aren’t really pets, and this one wasn’t one you could hold and love, she was loving in her own way and permitted a pet or scratch on that old noggin every now and then. She knew we would never harm her, and I think she knew that this was her last stop. Thank God we could provide her with a protected pasture, steady hay and that sweet feed she always loved.
She will be missed.
An Ode to a Good ol’ Gal
She came to us not long ago,
Her and Pixie were quite a show.
She sure was feisty,
and short and black;
But that ol gal sure had a knack
Of worming her way into my heart.
Yep. I was a goner. Right from the start.
I remember well that little tuft
Of white hairy cottony stuff
Right twixt her eyes
it went round and round.
Softer stuff was never found.
It’s why I named her what I did,
I loved that gal, I surely did.
She was old when she came to us,
But she birthed 4 kids without much fuss.
She roamed our pastures with age and grace;
The last few years she ran the place.
When she met Joel it was rather tense,
She ran him through the bob war fence!
She liked to roam around all day
And scratch her horns on a bale o’ hay.
Those horns of hers, man what a sight!
Perfect shape and long alright.
She liked her feed moist and sweet.
She’d run right to it on those little feet.
The past few days she was movin’ slow,
But how was we to know,
The time had come to meet her maker?
The angels came last night to take her.
I’m glad we had her for a time,
That big ol’ girl, that cow of mine.
Out my window I solemnly stare
Knowing I won’t see her there.
Yep, she’s moved on to full lush pastures
On toward the heavenly afters.
I pray her days are warm and blue.
I miss you girl. I truly do.
